You know your having a bad night when the team you follow and indeed have backed lose and your Internet crashes so you can't lay your bet off.
Last night i stayed up to watch the St Louis Cardinals play the LA Dodgers, I have fallen in love with the sport over the last couple of years, I never thought i would say that about a game that I have teased and mocked Americans with by calling it a glorified game of rounders, but it really is a great game. From the start of the first pitch to the last and the best thing with all American sports games they play till they have a winner, its very rare that any game will end in a draw.
I backed the Cardinals and sat down to watch and all was going well, they took an early lead and despite getting pegged back went ahead by 2-1 with Wainwright pitching a beautiful game. It comes to the bottom of the ninth and the Cardinals are still leading, with them trading at 1.10, I decided to lay off my bet but when I come to do this, the Internet is down, I am frantically trying to get back on without any success, in the meantime it's getting better for the Cardinals with them getting both batters out in quick succession, now it looks a mere formality and I wont need to have a saver on my bet, or so i thought. With the Cardinals only neeeding one out to win the game a fly ball is hit all the Cardinals player (Halliday) has to do is make an easy catch and its one game all in the play-offs and my bet has come in, if only life was that simple, he proceeds to drop the ball, the Dodgers player gets on base and from there it all comes crashing around me.
The Cardinals closer now looks like he would have trouble closing the curtains, his pitches are being hit and when they are not being hit he is walking them on base. Of course I now see the money slipping through my fingers much like the ball slipped through Hallidays glove and the
Dodgers not only tie the game at 2-2 but then go ahead with the very next pitch and win the game 3-2 and go 2-0 up in the series. While the commentator shouts Dodgers win Dodgers win, I am sitting stunned staring at a pc screen which shows broadband disabled, I can't even shout or let my frustration out as the rest of the family are asleep.
From looking in great shape with both bet and the team winning in the space of three minutes my Internet crashes I lose my bet and my team are now looking at getting knocked out of the world series.
The highs and lows of gambling.
