It was Jimmy Greaves who came out with the famous "Football it's a funny old game" and how right he is.
For a club who has lived most of it's life in the lower regions of the football league and only once ventured into the second tier of the promised land. Life was looking bleak, no manager no money and fat Barry Fry at the club.
Then along comes Sky One who makes a programme called Big Ron Manager, about Ron Atkinson who tries to help a club out of their troubles, what happens the caretaker manager resigns on the show and the club are made to look a laugh stock with its fights and tantrums.
Out of this comes a man who watches the show and decides to buy the club step forward Darragh McAntohny a man to save Peterbough and immediately says he wants to see Posh in the premiership in five-six years time. How l laughed at that. The posh manager is Keith Alexander installed by Barry fry and one of only two black managers in the league but his stay is short lived despite breaking non league transfer records the team does not gel and a run of games without a win soon seals his fate.
Talk was rife who would Posh get, Hoddle, Keegan the list was endless as is the case when fans start dreaming, who does The Chairman bring in, Darren Ferguson who has never managed a club before but played professional football through out his career and whose only real claim to fame is his famous father.
On the 10th November 2009 Darren Ferguson was named new Peterbough United manager, he
inherited a Posh team sitting 10th in the League Two, come April Posh just miss out on the play-offs and finish the season in 10th place.
2007/08 League Two season
All things are geared towards promotion money has been spent and record transfer paid out, Posh play entertaining football and enjoy success alone the way. Promotion was clinched with a win over Hereford and Posh come the end of the season finish runners-up in league two.
2008/09 League One season
In a league that included the likes of Leicester and Leeds promotion was always going to be difficult but a win over Leeds at London Rd soon had everyone talking not of if Posh could win promotion but if posh could keep hold of Ferguson, the chairman issues a hands off warning to interested clubs. February and Posh are seven points off automatic promotion, into March now and that gap is soon wiped out and Posh sit second in the league which is made even better with a win over league leaders Leicester at London Rd. Back to back promotions are clinched and now Peterbough are one step away from playing in the premiership.
The Chairman again tells Reading and QPR that the manager is going nowhere and in june signs a new four year contract.
2009/10 Championship season
Opening day and Posh can count themselves unlucky to lose 2-1 to Derby and suffer a terrible run of results which is only eased by beating Reading 3-2 after being 2-0 down. Signings are made but now the run still gets worse and Posh lose 3-1 to Newcastle to sit bottom of the table.
Monday November 9 and Posh and Ferguson part company, some will say he was sacked others will say it was by mutual agreement. Whatever it was it was a shock. He leaves the club 24th and bottom of the Championship
His record as manager of Peterborough United, 21 January 2007 to 9 November 2009:
Matches 145, Won 73, Drawn 32, Lost 40, Win 50.34%
Some would say he was a victim of his own success, if Posh never went up last season he might well be still in charge. I think despite the success he has had, he has made some terrible signings and has made mistakes when the defence needed sorting out he went out and bought wingers. His forward line is one dimensional and no plan B in case things go wrong. He seemed to have run out of ideas in the last few weeks.
If you are going to sack a manager now is the best time to do it with it being International week and no-one can say what the future holds.
I think that Young Fergie could end up as the next manager of Hull City. Watch this space.
And l almost forgot Fat Barry Fry is still at the club, it is indeed a funny old game.
